Michelle Obama’s British Love Affair

Just read an interesting article in the Daily Telegraph, UK by Belinda White entitled: Oscar de la Renta criticises Michelle Obama’s British Love Affair – Oscar de la Renta criticises Michelle Obama’s British Love Affair because the Fashion designer thinks Michelle Obama, America’s first lady (FLOTUS) should have chosen American designers for a state visit.

According to the Daily Telegraph, UK, De la Renta is not happy with Obama’s decision to wear not one, but two British based designers – Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton, and Roksanda Ilincic – during Chinese President Hu Jintao’s state visit to the US.

“My understanding,” de la Renta told WWD , “is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade – American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?”

But what really constitutes an American label these days? De la Renta hails from the Dominican Republic, and a great number of other designers who show at New York Fashion Week are immigrants, including several British designers such as Preen, Jenny Packham and Victoria Beckham). Ilincic shows her collection in London but was born in Serbia.
