Barbie, the busty blond bombshell doll with a minuscule waist and long plastic legs, turns 50 on Monday March 9. Mattel Inc., the maker, is celebrating the occasion all over the world with events including exhibits, parties and fashion shows.

Barbie is a 11.5-inch (29.2 cm.) plastic doll which hit toy stores in 1959 as a miniature teenage fashion model and is marketed in more than 140 countries.
