Michelle Obama Official Portrait Released

February 28, 2009 by Stephen S Alison · Leave a Comment

Michelle Obama Official PortraitMichelle Obama Official Portrait Released - The White House has released the official portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama.

It was taken in the Blue Room of the White House by photographer Joyce N. Boghosian. Obama wears a sleeveless dress, which has become something of a signature style. The black dress was designed by Michael Kors.

Here are some extracts from the official website (http://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/michelle_obama/):

A product of Chicago public schools, Michelle studied sociology and African-American studies at Princeton University. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1988, she joined the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin, where she later met the man who would become the love of her life.

After a few years, Michelle decided her true calling lay in encouraging people to serve their communities and their neighbors. She served as assistant commissioner of planning and development in Chicago’s City Hall before becoming the founding executive director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, an AmeriCorps program that prepares youth for public service.

In 1996, Michelle joined the University of Chicago with a vision of bringing campus and community together. As associate dean of student services, she developed the university’s first community service program, and under her leadership as vice president of community and external affairs for the University of Chicago Medical Center, volunteerism skyrocketed.

As First Lady, Michelle Obama looks forward to continuing her work on the issues close to her heart — supporting military families, helping working women balance career and family, and encouraging national service.

Michelle and Barack Obama have two daughters: Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7. Like their mother, the girls were born on the South Side of Chicago.

Do Bikinis Make Men Sexist?

February 18, 2009 by Stephen S Alison · Leave a Comment

Do Bikinis Make Men Sexist?Women dance as part of a bikini contest in Cancún, Mexico (Photograph by Jodi Cobb/NGS) Do Bikinis Make Men Sexist? - Sexy women in bikinis really do inspire some men to see them as objects, according to a new study of male behavior.

I have just read an interesting article in the National Geographic News entitled “Bikinis Make Men See Women as Objects”. The study claims that men see bikini-clad babes as … sex objects and that half-naked pinups lead men to objectify women.

And apparently, Brain scans reveal that when heterosexual men are shown pictures of scantily clad women, the region of the brain associated with tool use lights up. That study has also spawned headlines like “Bikinis Make Men See Women as Objects” and others of the “See, Men Really Are Disgusting Pigs!” variety.

Researchers performed brain scans on 21 heterosexual men and found that such sexy images light up the part of their brains associated with tools or other things that “you manipulate with your hands” (like, boobs!). Lead researcher Susan Fiske of Princeton University said:

“it’s as if they immediately thought to act on theses bodies” and observed, “They’re reacting to these women as if they’re not fully human.”

Men were also more likely to associate images of sexualized women with first-person action verbs such as “I push, I grasp, I handle,” researchers said in February 2009.

Michelle Obama's Inauguration OutfitMichelle Obama’s Inauguration Outfit Gathers Mixed Reviews…

The fashion choices of Michelle Obama, America’s new first lady continue to remain under the scanner. A red-and-black dress worn by her at Barack Obama’s victory speech in November 2008 drew adverse remarks from many fashion experts. Now her Inauguration outfits managed to both win and loose admiration simultaneously.

Mrs Obama’s choice of outfit underscored her reputation as a fashion individual with a strong sense of personal style. She chose a pale gold dress, matched with a coat made of Swiss wool lace, lined with French silk - a scintillating, pale-gold embossed coat with a matching shift dress which featured a sparkling geometric, diamanté neckline, and cardigan, by one of her favourite designers, Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo.

She accessorised the ensemble with leather gloves and a pair of British luxury brand, Jimmy Choo shoes, the ‘Glacier’ patent leather pumps in a striking shade of green.

Michelle Obama's Inauguration OutfitFor her first night as First Lady, Michelle Obama chose a one-shouldered, draped white chiffon ball gown created by Jason Wu, a 26-year-old Taipei-born designer.

Animal rights group PETA got Khloe Kardashian the 24-year-old younger sister of celebrity Kim Kardashian to strip for their “Get Naked” campaign that raises awareness and eyebrows over the issue of cruelty to animals in the fur industry.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 2.0 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world.

Khloe Kardashian Gets “Naked” for PETA - The younger sister of celebrity Kim bares it all for Peta. Khloe Kardashian showed the world that sister Kim isn’t the only one who can appear naked for the public eye, by bearing it all for a cause, reports both Fox news and People.com.

According to Fox, her family was with her in Los Angeles on Wednesday as she happily unveiled her billboard that read, “Fur? I’d Rather Go Naked.”

At the unveiling, the actress also had a little confession to make to the crowd. “Everyone in the family wears fur except me,” she admitted. Khloe is not happy about her family’s addiction to fur and confided to E! Online at the unveiling, “Kim wore fur last night.”

Her little sis is trying to change that though with tough love. Khloe said she gave Kim a hard time over her choice in apparel, adding, “I told her you cannot wear fur”.

Jennifer Lopez

The greatest brander in the entertainment industry today is Jennifer Lopez. She’s gone from being a hottie singer-actress to being a household name.

Almost every business has a trading name but only a minority of those businesses however, have what could be classed as a ‘brand’, a ‘brand name’ or ‘celeb brand’. Branding is a word commonly referred to by advertisers and marketing people, but what does it actually mean? Read more
