virginia madsenBrands playing major role in election - Companies back involvement, not candidates
By TED JOHNSON

Like many other stars this election season, Virginia Madsen traveled the country, taped a public service announcement and gave extensive media interviews to promote voter registration. The effort is in the name of the League of Women Voters — and Botox, for which Madsen serves as a spokeswoman.

This marriage of celebrity, campaign and consumer product is quite commonplace this election year.

Companies such as Pizza Hut, Mountain Dew, McDonald’s, MTV, IFC and Lifetime have weighed in — careful to promote voter involvement but not to endorse any candidate. Read more

Brits Lead the Show at London Fashion Week

August 16, 2008 by Stephen S Alison · 1 Comment

london fashion weekThe home team… Brits lead the show at London Fashion Week Daily Mail, UK - By Ellen Widdup

Luella, Christopher Kane and Stella McCartney are some of the homegrown stars who will be showing at London Fashion Week next month.

The new catwalk schedule for the spring/summer collections reveals that of the 53 designers featured, 40 are British, including veterans Jasper Conran, Jaeger, Nicole Farhi, Amanda Wakeley, Betty Jackson and Ossie Clark.

This season’s hot picks include adidas by McCartney, Marios Schwab and former Vogue journalist Luella Bartley.

The Issa collection - by Brazilian designer Daniella Issa Helayel - is also likely to be of interest after recent reports that Prince William’s girlfriend Kate Middleton favours the brand.

There is no sign of global couture stars such as Gucci, Dior, Chanel and Prada, who have always avoided London Fashion Week, preferring the catwalks of New York, Milan or Paris.

But a spokeswoman for this year’s six-day event , which starts on 14 September, insisted organisers were more interested in properly showcasing the work of London designers than attracting names from abroad. “London Fashion Week is known for promoting British designer fashion to global audiences,” she said.

“One of the key attractions for international buyers is to see the exciting new creative talents coming out of London.

“The same can be said for the New York show, which attracts predominantly American designers; or Milan, where you get the likes of Armani or Valentino; and Paris, which features designers like Dior. Our schedule is diverse but it focuses a lot on homegrown talent.

“The show includes iconic designers such as Betty Jackson and established names like Jasper Conran through to rising stars like Giles Deacon and the new generation taking their first steps into developing their businesses, like Louise Goldin.”

But one fashion insider said the lack of international names meant London Fashion Week failed to attract key magazine editors and buyers from the major international stores.

She said: “London has always been the poor cousin of Paris but this schedule just makes your heart sink. There are some good British designers on offer but they have been squeezed into slots alongside some other more bland and boring collections.

“The older established [British] designers deserve to be there but at the same time, they are unlikely to set the stage alight. Fashion editors and buyers will not take the time or pay to fly to London, get all dressed up and then have to sit through six or seven collections before they see anything worthwhile.”

Another expert said: “One fashion director from Barneys in New York is worth 20 from stores in the UK.”

Hamilton Says Consistency Now Key in Title Race

August 16, 2008 by Stephen S Alison · Leave a Comment

lewis hamiltonHamilton says consistency now key in title race - Reuters , Friday August 15 2008 -By Timothy Collings - LONDON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton, refreshed after a holiday, hopes to produce consistent results in the second half of the Formula One season and win the drivers’ title. The 23-year-old Briton, who leads this year’s championship, said on Friday he had enjoyed the three-week August break and felt revitalised for the final run-in starting at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on Aug. 24.

“It has given me a chance to recharge my batteries,” Hamilton said. “Looking back at the season so far, it feels like a different championship compared to last year: 2007 was very intense and consistency was incredibly important. This year, everybody’s results have been more varied and every driver who has won a race has also failed to score on at least two other occasions. That’s made getting strong results even more important but I think we’ll see consistency becoming crucial as we head towards the end of the season.”

Hamilton became the first driver this year to win two successive races when he triumphed at Silverstone in the British Grand Prix and at the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim.
The McLaren driver was unable to complete a rare hat-trick in Hungary where he had a puncture and was out-raced by Brazilian Felipe Massa in a Ferrari. Hamilton finished fourth after recovering while Massa suffered an engine failure.

In a team preview, looking ahead to the race in Spain on Valencia’s new street circuit, Hamilton added: “I’m wary of making predictions. The race in Hungary showed just how unpredictable Formula One can be and that’s one of the reasons why it’s such a fascinating sport.

“Clearly, though, I am still in a good position to challenge for the world championship and that remains my aim. We still feel confident about our chances — we know our rivals will be strong but we’ve worked hard to improve the car and we are confident we’ll be competitive. “The most important thing is to finish consistently in the points.” (Editing by Clare Fallon)
